The Tascam Tapes

1.
Lay back down, eyes dart around, Mind deceived by sound, every crackle you hear. Seems like I've been walking for days, Writhing sunlight piercing my shades. But I'm feeling pretty good, I'm wondering if I should allow myself this. Now I'm feeling pretty low, The moments they come they go, I have nothing to show but rags and ruins. Lay back down, eyes search around, No-one to be found and I'm feeling alone, A moment of clarity, a moment to feel free, an epiphany they all escape me. But I'm feeling pretty good, I'm wondering if I should allow myself this. Now I'm feeling pretty low, The moments they come they go, I have nothing to show but rags and ruins. I'm finally dead on my heels, I've no idea what this journey yields, The shapes of the trees conform to every many fear I have. I should have been watching my back, I should have had a plan of attack, I should have known something was amiss, I should never have stolen a kiss. I could have been so much more, If I wasn't chained to the floor, But those shackles are so entwined, With the shackles in my mind. Does life hold any more mystery for me? Are there layers that I just can't see? Silence assumes all that I do, as I make my way home to you.

I go along for the ride, I don’t speak i just grin like a child. The sun bursts through our window pane, as you drift in and out of lane. I forgot how hard you were to please, but when you’re hurt y’know it brings me to my knees. I forgot how much you like to talk, I can barely muster a thought. All I see is me and you hanging out for good, All I see is me and you living like we should, All I see is me, oh I’m a little bit green, All I see is me, trying to remain in this scene. You say my face is so easy to read, I’m too embarrassed to respond as you need. You say we’re two worlds apart, but those worlds are aligned in my heart. You say you long to be free, but there are no shackles with me. All I see is me and you hanging out for good, All I see is me and you living like we should, All I see is me, oh I’m a little bit green, All I see is me, trying to stay in this scene.

At My Door 03:15
I hear you knockin' at my door, But you're not welcome anymore. I get the feeling you think I'm out of time, But I'm not ready to put things aside. Inhibitions lowered, your guard is down, You could easily become talk of the town. Patiently you try to get through, But theres no answers coming to you. We make believe it's the only way we feel, There's nothings left to do when reality gets real. I hear you knockin' at my door, But it's much fainter than it was before. I hear you shuffling in the corridor, So uncertain, so unsure. We make believe it's the only way we feel, There's nothings left to do when reality gets real.
4.
An uncertain smile, graced your face for a while, now it’s lost in the ether, A brush with romance, never gave it a chance, now it’s lost in the ether. Everything seems so temporary to me, to me, It’s hard to find meaning in things so fleeting to me, for me. Another lover, comes to darken your corner, now they’re lost in the ether, A sincere apology, never meant to be, oh how that’s lost in the ether. Everything seems so temporary to me, to me, It’s hard to find meaning in things so fleeting to me, for me. A moment in time, is it ever really mine? There is so much longing to do before were gone and through. I’m clutching at strands that are slipping through my hands, I have such little control, it’s all I’ve ever known. A last note is played, I exit the stage, now I’m lost in the ether.
5.
So Sure 04:32
You’re so sure, you’re so sure of yourself, You have more certainty than anyone else, You’re so sure, you’re so sure of yourself, You exude confidence like nobody else. I’ve got a feeling you’re gonna have a hard life, The worlds your oyster but you might need a delicate hand, I’ve got a feeling you’re gonna have a hard life, Things may not always be as easy as you’ve found. You’re so sure, you’re so sure of yourself, It’s like you’re cast under your own spell, You’re so sure, you’re so sure of yourself, If the doubts were to creep in could anyone really tell? I’ve got a feeling you’re gonna have a hard life, The worlds your oyster but you might need a delicate hand, I’ve got a feeling you’re gonna have a hard life, Things may not always be as easy as you’ve found. I know you’re not alone, I know you’re not alone.
6.
We don’t know what we’ll do, We don’t know where we’ll be, We don’t know who we’ll see, We don’t make any plans. We could be high or low, We could be fast or slow, We don’t make any plans. She said it’s just harmless fun, I said I’m not the one, I don’t make any plans. She said it’s easy for me, I said you just don’t see, I don’t make any plans. Time is so precious that I just don’t give it up easily, Time is so precious that I just can’t give it up easily. We could be tame or wild, We could be like a child, We don’t make any plans. We could be all at sea, We could be gone with the breeze, We don’t make any plans. She said just try it once, I think you know my response I said I don’t make any plans. She said you have your reasons, They don’t change with the seasons No you don’t make any plans. Time is so precious (to me) that I just don’t give it up easily, Time is so precious (to me) that I just can’t give it up easily.

Coming Down 04:31
I'm coming down, I'm coming down, I'm coming down, I'm coming down, I'm coming down. Watch the lights begin to fade, Watch clarity replace shade, And the arms that used to embrace, They no longer hold their place. (repeat) I'm coming down, I'm coming down, I'm coming down, I'm coming down, I'm coming down. I've replaced my devil with an angel, I covered darkness with light, I asked my heart if it is right? But the pieces are too out of sight. (repeat) I'm coming down, I'm coming down, I'm coming down, I'm coming down, I'm coming down. I fill my head with something, Just to have a thought to hold, But I'm muted to try and talk and the thoughts go left untold. (repeat) I'm coming down, I'm coming around, I'm coming down, I'm coming around, I'm coming down.

about

These are old songs that I re-recorded on this Tascam 4 track analog tape recorder using a Shure 57 mic. Very organic, very lo-fi and very hissy but these are all qualities I like! This is stripped down to basic 4 tracks for each (2 guitar, 2 vocals).

The only new song is 'At My Door' as this EP is being released in tandem with 'A Musical Menagerie (from the lockdown era)' which contains the full bells and whistles version of 'At My Door'.

Coming Down and Lost In The Ether were previous Tascam tape recordings that were released in some form. All the other tracks are newly recorded fresh takes on old tunes.

about

Steven P Robinson Chicago, Illinois

Originally from England, now residing in Chicago, I'm a singer-songwriter operating under the not too imaginative nom de plume Steven P. Robinson. Once described in some strange backhanded compliment as 'The King of Oxfam Folk' by now defunct music website Angry Ape for my beg, borrow, steal attitude to songwriting, I create mainly lo-fi tunes that I release as EP's. ... more
